Gallatin School District began the year with a deficit spending in the budget, but Superintendent Dennis Croy told the Gallatin R-5 Board of Education that balances are still strong and the school has in excess $2 million. Interest rates are down and that is an area of concern.
Some higher than expected costs will affect the budget.
The board is looking for ways to save money and cut back on spending, including looking at retirees and cuts to programs.
Croy said the school districts are not sure how much money will be received from state and federal funding, or if the foundation formula will be funded 100%. There have already been cuts in transportation.
In other business, Priscilla Whitt and Tim Tadlock have filed to run for the school board in the April election. Incumbents who had already filed for reelection are Tim Bradford, Donnie Smith and Sandra Alden.
A snow day was made up on Jan. 17. Two more makeup days will be tagged on at the end of the year.
Bills in the amount of $260,859.85 were approved for payment.
Board members were presented MSBA certificates for service.
Sandra Alden was nominated for regional chairman for the MSBA board of directors.
The superintendent attended a meeting about PSRS, the state teacher retirement system.
Reports were heard from principals Elbert and Cox.
A tuition request for Pressley Wells was granted.
Bids were accepted from Mitch Riley and Will Salmon for snow removal.
The board considered the proposed calendar and tabled action until February to let teachers have input on the dates.
Board members were given a presentation on updates to the school’s website.
Board policy updates were handed out.
The board entered into executive session for superintendent evaluation and personnel discussion.
