Just two days after winning a second state football title, the Hamilton Hornets hit the basketball floor running and gunning to a 98-25 victory over Winston in the opening round of the Gallatin Invitational Tournament.

Hamilton was one of eight top seeds to pass first round tests on Monday and Tuesday. Trenton knocked off host Gallatin, 57-46, to advance to a Thursday, 5:45 game with the top-seeded Hornets. For the second year in a row, #2 Gilman City will face #3 Newtown-Harris in a boys’ semifinal contest slated for 8:15 on Thursday.

The top-seeded Hamilton girls blew past Tri-County, 100-22, on Tuesday to earn a semifinal berth against conference rival Maysville, which defeated #5 Newtown-Harris, 63-34. They match up at 7 p.m. Thursday. Trenton (#2) and Winston (#3) will provide a contrast in styles when they meet in the other girls’ semifinal at 4:30 on Thursday. Trenton also challenged the century mark with a running clock as the Lady Bulldogs beat Gilman City, 89-32, on Tuesday.

On the loser’s bracket side, Gallatin’s girls are back in action tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. against Gilman City. Tri-County’s girls take on Newtown-Harris at 4:30. Gallatin’s boys square off against Winston at 8:15. Maysville’s boys play Tri-County at 5:45.

Friday’s GIT schedule features seventh place games at 4:30 (girls) and 5:45 (boys), followed by consolation contests at 7:00 (girls) and 8:15 (boys). Saturday’s slate of games begins with the girls’ third place game at noon, followed by the boys’ third place game at 1:30, girls championship at 3:00 and boys title game at 4:30.

Winston’s Lady Redbirds broke open a close game in the second quarter with a 21-9 surge that carried them to a 25-15 halftime advantage and eventually a 42-27 win over Gallatin in Monday’s opening round. With the outcome, the Lady Redbirds chalked up their first GIT first round victory since 1990.

The Lady Redbirds were led by Chandler Newman with 13 points and Baylea Martin with 12 points. Tory Wood led Gallatin with 13 points.

Gallatin’s boy rallied late but it wasn’t enough. The GHS Bulldogs held a couple of brief two-point leads in the second quarter but Trenton would stretch to a double-digit advantage by the end of the third quarter.

Derrick Lin drove the lane and dished off to Preston Turley for what would be a three-point play that cut the lead to 45-37 with 5:45 to play. Turley cut the net with a trey with under a minute remaining to pull Gallatin within six but Trenton notched all eight free throw attempts down the stretch to preserve the win.

Turley paced Gallatin with 13 points. Lin added 12.
