The winners of the Patriot=s Pen and Voice of Democracy essay writing contests were announced during an assembly honoring area veterans held Nov. 12 at the Gallatin High School. Students from Gallatin, Winston and Pattonsburg participated in the contest.
The winners of the Patriot=s Pen and Voice of Democracy essay writing contests were announced during an assembly honoring area veterans held Friday at the Gallatin High School. Students from Gallatin, Winston and Pattonsburg participated in the contest.
Samantha Boyd won the Patriot=s Pen youth-essay writing contest for students in grades six, seven and eight. Other winners were Mattison Ishmael, second place and Kelsie Huggins, third place.
Breanne Brammer won the Voice of Democracy contest. The VOD scholarship program is an audio-essay contest for high school students in grades 9-12. This year=s theme was "Does My Generation Have a Role in America=s Future?" Frank Frazier Post 2172 and Ladies Auxiliary hosted the two programs.
Pattonsburg R=2’s Emily Dilley won second place and Dillon Lowrey won third place in the Voice of Democracy essay contest.
Carl Carder presented the program and speech to the students. Carl has served in the navy 30 years. He was promoted to command master chief of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion-15 on July 18 of 2008 in a Change of Command ceremony at the base in Belton. He has achieved the rank of E-9. Only about 1% of navy personnel attain this rank.
