The Envirothon is an outdoor competition testing a team’s ability to answer environmental questions in the actual environment.  It includes a station on aquatics at a pond habitat, forestry at a timbered habitat, wildlife station, soils station at a soil pit area, a current issue station (this year on estuaries), and an oral presentation on this year’s environmental problem related to estuaries.

Team number 1, with Kaymon Witt, Ashley Burns, Becca Chadwick, Becca Mott, and Cole McDaniel placed third out of 11 teams present. They will continue on to state competition on April 13 at a location to be announced later.
Missouri Academy placed first and Norborne placed second.

Team number 2 from Gallatin, with Tory Wood, Brandon Curtis, Chaz Green, Michelle Monteith, and Len Deutschman, also competed.

Team Number 1 placed first in the aquatics, 2nd in soils, 3rd in the oral presentation, 3rd in forestry, a tie for 3rd in the current issue – estuaries, and 4th in wildlife, covering the six stations in this outdoor competition.

Daviess County Soil and Water District Board of Supervisors funded the registration fees for the two teams at $75 per team. The Gallatin R-5 Schools provided the bus and bus driver and time off to compete. Both the Gallatin school and Daviess County Soil are feeling the financial crunch but were willing to give the students this opportunity.

GHS students plan to practice hard for the state Envirothon. They have their eyes set to go to Canada this summer to the National Envirothon. To do this, they must take first at state this spring out of the top 24 teams from all across Missouri no matter what the school size.
