For the first time, GHS female athletes were treated to a fall sports banquet and award ceremony of their own last Thursday evening. The fall football banquet will be held Nov. 12.
Alicia Chrisman gave the welcome on behalf of the booster club and presented lone senior Becca Mott with a gift from the club. Rick Lin, athletic director, served as master of ceremonies.
Lady Bulldog golf coach Cindy Boles introduced her team members. "We had a really young team with four freshmen, but got to have a team score all year long," she commented. "We dropped our team score 40 points to a team-low 251. That’s pretty good for several kids who just picked up golf clubs two weeks before the season started," she added.
Golfers this year were Kailey Cox, Carlye Guffey, Markecia Lewis and Bailey Morrison, who all earned first-year letters. Mattie Burge, a three-year letterwinner and 2010 GRC champion and sectional qualifier, was named team MVP. Morrison was named most improved.
GHS girls softball coach Casey Moberly described their season as a roller coaster ride of ups and downs but credited much of that to a young, inexperienced team.
Contributing at the junior varsity level for Coach Moberly were Molly Mott, Kelsey Bird, Elena Steele, Shelby Springer and Jade Steele. Earning first-year varsity letters were Kirbie Crouse, Morgan Horvatin, Kaitlyn Hefley, Kaitlyn McNeely and Tory Wood. Second-year letterwinners were Kylie Cameron, Celsie Baker, Megan Beck, Marissa McNeely, Ashley Burns and Becca Mott.
The rookie of the year honor fell to Wood. Springer was named most improved. Becca Mott received the most inspirational award. Crouse was recognized as the player who came through in the clutch. Hefley garnered the hustle award and Horvatin was team MVP.
Courtney Ray served as assistant softball coach. Kailey Elbert served as softball statistician and Micah Ray was team manager.
Mr. Lin announced academic all-GRC winners who met the criteria of being a varsity letterwinner and carrying at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA at the end of the previous semester. Those award winners were Morrison, Guffey, Burge, Horvatin, Beck, Marsissa McNeely, Cameron and Burns.
