Superintendent Dennis Croy made the official announcement to members of the Gallatin school board that Gallatin R-5 has been awarded the Distinguished in Performance title, based on the APR report from DESE.
Supt. Croy also spoke about activities, meetings attended, and the district superintendents meeting with Commissioner Nicastro as the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Gallatin Board of Education on Oct. 14 in the high school library.
The meeting was called to order by President Brice Terry. The agenda was approved. The board also approved the consent calendar for the payment of bills and the minutes of the previous meeting.
Don Von Opitz had questions about the policy for drug testing bus drivers and safety.
Principal Chris Elbert reported on high school attendance, discipline reports, enrollment figures and dates of activities.
Principal Toni Cox spoke about elementary attendance and enrollment as well as the Title I parent meeting, upcoming parent teacher conferences, activities and events. There were requests from two wrestling clubs and an individual to use school facilities. Permission was granted for use of the building with stipulations as to setup, clean-up, and liability insurance.
Discussion items included budget concerns, insurance rates and quotes, and DESE educational policy and trends.
The board voted to enter closed session for discussion of personnel. At the conclusion of executive session, the board entered open session and adjourned the meeting at 8 p.m.
Others attending the meeting were board members Sandra Alden, Tim Bradford, Don Smith, and Jesse Bird, as well as board secretary Lynda Swopes. Dr. Bill Irby and Trent Dowell were absent. Teachers and guests attending were Alan Tairent, Bob Sharp, Abby Wilson, Sara Koening, Sheryl Warren, and Rhonda McCann.
The next meeting will be Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school library.
