For the second week in a row, a Grand River Conference team pulled itself out of the league basement. This time it was King City that did the climbing, at Gallatin’s expense.

Searching for their first win of the season, the Wildkats put together an effort just strong enough to clip the Bulldogs, 16-6, in an ugly game marred by penalties and turnovers.

Some schools offer in the game-day programs an illustrated guide to penalty signals handed out by the officials. Spectators at last Friday’s game could have used just such a program.

Rarely did either team follow through with an offensive series without at least a couple of whistle stops. Unofficially, there were over a dozen penalties before the teams left the field for intermission.

After several stuttering starts and stops by both teams, the Wildkats got on the board with 27 seconds remaining in the first half when quarterback Dalton Workman rolled right and kept right on going into the end zone. Workman’s pass to Trey Forward produced a two-point conversion.

Gallatin was able to get just inside King City’s 25-yard line on an initial second half possession but could not score, but the Bulldogs struck with 5:49 left in the third when Jackson Leggett broke into the open and followed a good block by Hayden Bott into the end zone. A conversion pass attempt fell incomplete and the Dogs trailed, 8-6.

Three minutes later, Workman ran untouched for 50 yards and a score, and tossed another conversion pass, this time to Corey Keller, for a 16-6 KCHS lead.

The Bulldogs closed out the third quarter with a promising drive that featured a big fourth down Brandon Ness to Chad Ness completion, but a holding call pushed the Dogs into a fourth and 19 situation. Another illegal procedure penalty brought on a punt.

Gallatin battled back in the fourth period with a drive to the Wildkat 31 when Ness connected with Isaac Mattis for a first down. A high punt snap contributed to a 12-yard loss. Ness hit Devin Hall with a completion to the 15-yard line but again a holding penalty pushed the Dogs back. By the time fourth down rolled around, Gallatin needed 27 yards for a new set of downs.

The Bulldogs had no answer for Workman, who accounted for 87% of his team’s offense by rushing for 105 yards and two scores and completing 18 of 31 passes for 181 yards.

District play begins this Friday for the Bulldogs when they travel to Braymer to take on the 4-3 Bobcats, winner of three straight and four of their last five. Gallatin and Braymer shared a common opponent in Maysville. The Bobcats beat the Wolverines, 28-12, on Oct. 1. Gallatin lost to Maysville, 8-6, on Sept. 17.
