Gallatin’s Mattie Burge joined a select group of golfers on Monday by winning the Grand River Conference Golf Tournament held in Bethany.
Burge shot 108 over 18 holes to defeat Hamilton’s Angie Dalton in a scorecard playoff. Dalton also carded a 108 to finish ahead of Maysville’s Emily Walling, who shot 113.
Burge is Gallatin’s first GRC golf champ since Whitney Boyd in 2005, and joins three others, Jamie Lunsford (2001), Angie Culver (1992) and Sally Spillman (1983) as GHS conference medalist.
The GHS junior entered conference play at a disadvantage by not having played South Harrison’s course this season. Last Tuesday’s scheduled meet at South Harrison was rained out. Last Thursday’s tri-meet with Stanberry and Albany was rained out at Daviess County Country Club and moved to Bethany, but Burge did not compete in that event.
Kecia Lewis shot the low score for Gallatin, a 57, in that meet. Kaley Cox carded a 67, Bailey Morrison shot 68 and Carlye Guffey added a 72 at Bethany.
Burge and Morrison teamed up for a sixth place finish in the best shot competition at the Albany Tournament on Sept. 20. Cox, Guffey and Lewis also competed for the Lady Bulldogs.
GHS golfers are in Chillicothe today (Wednesday) competing in the Class 1, District 7 Tournament, which began at 9 a.m. at the Green Hills Golf Course.
