Patriot’s Pen is a youth-essay writing contest for students in grades six, seven and eight. Contestants write a 300-400 word essay based on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is "Does Patriotism Still Matter?"
The Voice of Democracy (VOD) scholarship program is an audio-essay contest for high school students in grades 9-12. This year’s theme is "Does My Generation Have a Role in America’s Future?".
Local prizes for the contests are $25 for first place; $20 for second place; and $15 for third place. The first place winner goes on to compete at districts. District winners then compete at nationals. The deadline for entries to the local chapter is Nov. 1 for both contests. Contact Sherri Carder, VOD and Patriot Pen chairperson, at 660-663-3106 for more information.
All Daviess County Schools are encouraged to participate. An individual may participate on their own as may children that are home schooled. Information will be sent out to the schools this week. If you are a teacher who wants to participate and needs more information contact the program chairperson.
The first-place winner of the Voice of Democracy contest, who competes with all the first-place VFW Department winners, receives a $30,000 scholarship that is paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school.
Besides competing for the top scholarship prize, as well as other national scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $16,000, each Department’s first-place winner receives an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., March 5-9, 2011, sponsored by Target.
Patriot Pen first-place winner receives a $10,000 savings bond and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C. The top national winners each receive a savings bond anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000.
The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed these programs on the NASSP National Advisory List of Contests and Activities for 2009-2010.
