A new elementary school in Iowa City, Iowa, has been named for Buford Garner, native of Winston.

Buford Garner (1916-2008) was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harl Garner of Winston. He was a graduate of Winston Schools, Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, and the University of Missouri at Kansas City.

Garner received a "distinguished alumni award" from Northwest Missouri State University and an "honorary doctorate" from Iowa Wesleyan College, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

He served in administrative positions in several Missouri schools and taught at Northwest Missouri State University before going to Iowa City as high school principal. He followed by being superintendent of the Iowa City Community School District for 17 years.

Garner also served in the Iowa Department of Public Instruction as superintendent of the Grinnell Public Schools and as administrator of the Area Education Agency in Southeast Iowa. He retired in 1981.

Garner’s sisters, Mary Virginia Croy (Mrs. Paul) of Gallatin and Jo Ann Stonner Huston of Winston are both deceased. His brother, John Garner, lives in Lancaster, Penn.

Buford married Bernice Mariatt of Cameron. Bernice resides in Iowa City, Iowa. Their children are: Sue Updegraff, West Union, Iowa, Janie Schomberg, Iowa City, Iowa, and Jac Garner, Madison, Wis.

The Buford Garner Elementary School opened Aug. 19, 2010, housing 380 students in kindergarten through sixth grade.
