Jean Harlow, 79, of Gallatin passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at the Gallatin Nursing and Rehab Center. Services were held at 10 am Saturday, July 17, at McWilliams Funeral Home in Gallatin. Family visitation was held from 6-8 pm Friday at the funeral home. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery, near Gallatin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gallatin Senior Citizens Center, in care of the funeral home.

Jean was born June 5, 1931, to Kene and Ruby (Silvius) Orr in, Kingston, Mo., where she attended school. Jean was united in marriage to Dean Harlow, March 25, 1949, in Kingston, Mo. The couple made their home on the family farm south of Gallatin where they raised their son Bob. Jean began her cooking career in the early 60’s where she was employed at the McDonald Tea Room in Gallatin for over 30 years. She spent endless hours preparing food and was well known for her homemade pies, hot rolls, pecan rolls and that wonderful fried chicken. When she first started at the tea room she was caretaker for Mrs. McDonald, making sure breakfast was prepared so Virginia was able to start her day. Jean always made the guests feel welcome and made sure that their food was prepared to their liking. She also cooked for Whitt’s Dinner Bell and Shakey’s Place. Jean enjoyed sharing her cooking talents; and took great pride in preparing the food she served.
Jean was a member of the First Christian Church in Kingston and the Hickory Grove Club in Gallatin. In her spare time, Jean liked to work in her garden and she loved to read. After retiring, she did a weekly column in the Gallatin paper and shared her favorite recipes with the community. She later published a successful cookbook with her favorite recipes; cooking was Jean’s passion and a talent she loved to share. Jean was a loving mother, sister and grandmother, an inspiration to many people; she sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dean in 1991, infant daughter Beverly Jean and her sister Patsy Potts.
Survivors include her son, Bob Harlow and wife Ginger of Gallatin; sister, Shirley Findley of Kingston, Mo.; brother, Billy Orr of Cowgill, Mo.; grandson, Justin Harlow and wife Caitlin and great grandson, Gage Harlow, all of Gallatin.
