The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office participated in the "You Drink and Drive. You Lose" crackdown conducted July 2-5.
On July 3, officers conducted a 3-hour checkpoint at the Altamont and north entrances to Lake Viking. Approximately 300 or more vehicles traveled through both of these checkpoints.
Driver’s license, insurance cards and proper vehicle registrations were checked during the checkpoint. Three motorists were found without a valid driver’s license. One motorist had to perform a field sobriety test due to consuming intoxicates. Five motorists were found without proper insurance cards. One motorist was in possession of drug paraphernalia.
During the enforcement effort, officers issued a total of 12 tickets including one arrest for driving while intoxicated, one for speeding, one for minor in possession of intoxicants and one for unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. A member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol also assisted in the checkpoint.
"When we remove a drunk driver from the roads, we’re all safer," stated Sheriff Ben Becerra. "Law enforcement will continue to encourage drivers to make a simple, smart choice to drive sober."
Drunk driving remains one of the top causes of fatal car crashes in Missouri. In 2009, 262 people were killed, 1,113 were seriously injured, and 3,398 were moderately injured in crashes involving an impaired driver.
