Alyssa Strein, a business education major from Altamont has received the Susan Douglas Memorial Scholarship at Northwest Missouri State.
The scholarship is awarded for two years by the Northwest District of the Missouri Business Education Association and named in memory of the late Susan Douglas. The scholarship is awarded to a business education major for the year he or she will student teach. The recipient must have graduated from a high school in northwest Missouri.
Strein is a 2007 graduate of Gallatin High School and will student teach and graduate from Northwest in spring 2011.
Douglas graduated from Northwest in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. She also earned a master’s degree in vocational business from Northwest in 1999. She was a native of Fairfax and longtime Maryville resident.
Douglas taught at Nodaway Holt High School from 1993 until her death in 2008 after a long battle with breast cancer. She also taught at South Holt High School in Oregon, Mo., and Jefferson High School in Conception.
Richard Douglas, Susan’s husband of 33 years, said his wife was a strong supporter of education. She was involved in business organizations and worked hard to promote higher education.
"(The scholarship) helps us to remember her, and it’s just an honor what the University has done for her and the business teachers," Douglas said. "I’d like to continue to keep Susan in mind and all the work that she did in her career with student involvement."
All three of the Douglas’s children attended Northwest. Daughter Kari and oldest son Ryan are Northwest graduates. The couple’s youngest son, Christopher, attended Northwest before transferring to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he will graduate in December with a civil engineering degree.
