Winona M. Whitfield, 98, passed away Saturday, May 29, at the Daviess County Nursing and Rehab. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 5, at McWilliams Funeral Home in Gallatin. Family visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Private inurnment will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery near Gallatin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gallatin Senior Citizens Center in care of the funeral home.

Winona was born Sept. 6, 1911, to Arthur and Della (Sloan) Landes in rural Daviess County, Mo. She graduated from Jameson High School. Winona was united in marriage to Jeff C. Whitfield, March 30, 1934. The couple lived most of their married lives in Gallatin where you could find Winona gardening, taking care of her many fruit trees and canning a variety fruits and vegetables that she had harvested for the year; she never shied way from hard work. Winona started her career as a beautician in the 1930’s and in late 40’s decided to open a shop in her home in Gallatin, a profession that she dearly loved and served her clients for over 40 years retiring in the early 70’s. Over the many years Winona made deep and lasting relationships and enjoyed being part of the community. Winona loved to knit, crochet and pieced many hand quilts; she enjoyed working with her hands and always had a project ready to start. Holiday’s were a special occasion for Winona; she loved to prepare that special meal for her family. She was a wonderful cook and delighted being surrounded by her family.
Winona was a member of the First Christian Church in Gallatin. She also was a member of Gallatin Garden Club and the ladies Bridge Club. Winona and Jeff also belonged to the evening couple’s Bridge Club. She enjoyed the fellowship she shared with her friends. Winona was a kind and gentle person who loved her family and friends; she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Winona was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jeff C. Whitfield in 1993, son Jeff in 2005 and granddaughter Jessica Marie Whitfield in 1991.
Winona is survived by her son John Whitfield and Pam Parton of Gallatin; brothers, Walter Landes of Colorado Springs, Colo., Boyd Landes of Osawatomie, Kan., daughter-in-law Pam (Whitfield) McNeel of Gallatin; two grandsons, John J.
