The Grand River Storm 12-under and 18-under girls softball teams traveled to Blue Springs this past weekend to compete in the Summer Kickoff Tournament. Both teams competed well and brought home trophies.
The 12-under girls went 5-1 to receive second place. They opened tournament play on Saturday morning with a 8-2 win over Lee Summit Cowgirls. The second game of the day was a 9-1 victory over the Lancers of Blue Springs. Saturday’s final game saw the Storm team defeat the Orange Crush of Olathe, Kan. Saturday’s MVP medal winners were Jackie Haley, Kelly Warford and Haley Craig. Sunday mornings first round opponents were the Red Hotz from Overland Park, Kan. Storm came out with at 12-9 win. Kelly Warford was the winning pitcher with relief help from Mattie Thomas. In the semi-finals Storm was pitted against #1 seed Midwest Softball from Wellsville. Storm pulled off the upset 11-8 with Kendra Bird as the winning pitcher and relief help from Mattie Thomas. In the Championship game Storm was defeated 6-3 to finish second. Area girls competing for Storm this year are Kelly Warford, Pattonsburg, and Renae Brice and Skylar Hall, Winston.
While the 12-under team competed on one field, the 18-under team was playing on a neighboring field. The Saturday opening round opponent was the Blue Springs Misfits, who defeated them 7-1. The second game saw the team defeat Pleasant Hill Attitude 9-1 and in the third game of the day, Storm defeated Team Kansas City 9-1. MVP medals were awarded to Kaylee Barnett, Hillary Todd and Kylie Marconnet. In bracket play on Sunday, Storm had a rematch with Pleasant Hill Attitude with Storm coming out ahead 11-1 behind the pitching of Courtney Warford. The semi-final matchup saw Storm come up short 8-6 to bring home the third place trophy. Area girls competing for Storm this year are Courtney Warford, Pattonsburg, and Rachel Brice, Nichole Gregornick and Baylea Martin, Winston.
