An explosion occurred at the water plant in Maysville at approximately 1:30 p.m. Tuesday May 11.
A chemical leak at the plant prompted an evacuation of about 50 people who lived near the plant.
"There was a huge explosion," said a witness who works at a nearby business. "Something at the water plant exploded big time. It scared us. It was really loud. There was smoke and then a series of other little popping noises."
The leak came from a barrel located in a parking lot behind a maintenance building across from the water plant. The barrel ruptured when a city employee attempted to move it to clear space.
No injuries were reported and residents returned to their homes the same afternoon. The county fire department and Region H Hazmat are working to cleanup the spill.
