The Northwest Vipers 9-year-old baseball team opened its 2010 campaign with a second place finish at the Scott McGinniss Diamond Classic held May 1-2 at the Fountain Bluff Sports Complex in Liberty.
The Vipers went 3-0 in pool play, defeating the Wellington Gators, 16-4, beating the Liberty Crush, 10-5, and downing Team Extreme from St. Joseph, 12-4.
In a pitchers’ duel, the Vipers defeated the Blue Springs Bulldogs, 3-1, to advance to the tournament championship, where they faced Millhouse of Kansas City.
The Vipers could tally only four hits and fell, 11-3, in the title game.
Jacob Lewis, Winston, is a member of the Vipers team. The team’s next action comes this weekend at the Markey MAY-hem Tournament in Belton.
