Did you know that skin cancer prevention starts with children? The damage from the sun’s UV rays build up over time. From sunburns to freckles, these are signs that your skin has had damage and puts you at higher risk of skin cancer later in life.

Later in life doesn’t necessarily mean in a person’s 80’s. Skin cancer can show up in a person’s 20’s if enough skin damage has occurred. There are several things you can do to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer and there are things you can do to detect skin cancer in its earliest stages, when it’s most curable.

If you can remember these ABC’s of skin cancer prevention and use them daily, you will significantly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer:

A stands for AWAY: Stay away from the sun in the middle of the day.

B stands for BLOCK: Use SPF 15 or higher sunscreen, and re-apply often.

C stands for COVER UP: wear a shirt and a hat.

The other part of skin cancer prevention is detection. Finding skin cancer and getting early medical care for it is important in preventing death. Doing a monthly skin exam is important. Either having someone look at your skin for you or using a mirror to inspect your own skin, and report any moles or lesions that are changing to your doctor.
