"Anybody with a big heart for animals and a desire to help is invited to this meeting," said Pam Testi of Gallatin, who serves as president of the non-profit rescue group.

The group was organized in December of last year. It has received its state license and is registered as a non-profit corporation.

Ms. Testi said the group’s first goal will be to promote community awareness both in the existence of the local organization and its mission. Its mission is to help animals who are being abused or neglected and to rescue those who are unwanted or mistreated. One of the group’s highest priorities is to raise public awareness in the proper care for domestic animals.

Since forming, the society has assisted the Gallatin Police Department in its efforts to adopt dogs out of the city pound to private homes or no-kill shelters. Volunteers have also spent this winter doing rescue work and checking on the welfare of outdoor animals during the extremely cold weather. "We’ve gotten to know the community as we passed out straw for dog houses, while looking out for the well being of pets kept outside," Ms. Testi said.

"We would like anyone interested to come forward and be a part of this group," she added. "Whether it’s signing your name to a petition, donating time or money, or participating in the rescuing of the animals, we need help, we need more people."

Cheri Wayne is vice-president of the Daviess County Humane Society. Another diligent volunteer is Meghan Giacopelli.

"Being newly formed, we’ve not yet located," Ms. Testi said. "One of our goals for the near future is to have an office set up and ultimately a shelter. But it all takes funds, therefore, it all takes fund-raising."

The phone number for the Daviess County Humane Society is 660-605-4072.

Anyone interested in animal welfare is invited to attend the Daviess County Humane Society meeting on April 22.
