Gallatin varsity track teams kicked off the spring season on a cold, breezy day at Trenton High School on Thursday, with mixed results.
A young Lady Bulldog squad found slim pickings in competition with state-champion Hamilton, as well as Lawson, Trenton, Richmond, Carrollton and Princeton. The 4×200-meter relay team of Shelby Bradley, Alyison Widner, Jadriene Steele and Celsie Baker finished sixth to produce the lone point of the meet for their team.
Also competing for the Lady Bulldogs were Kendra Bradley, Kylie Cameron, Sheri Eaton, Kaley Esbeck, Sarah Smith and Shelby Springer.
The Bulldog boys piled up 88 points, including 38 in just three field events, to finish third behind Lawson (147) and Hamilton (96).
Chad Ness and Isaac Mattis finished first and third, respectively, in the pole vault for a 16-point scoring burst. Ness cleared the bar at 10’6" and Mattis cleared 10′.
Tyler Brackett and Colton Selby took second (20-2.5) and third (19-11.25), respectively, in the long jump. Brackett also finished second in the triple jump (39-9.5)and won both the 100-meter dash (11.43) and 200-meter dash (23.51).
Selby was also a fifth place finisher in the 100-meter dash (11.87).
Also picking up points for the Bulldogs were: Cody Engel, fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (19.05); Derrick Lin, sixth in the 800-meter run (2:27.98); Donovan Stout, second in the 400-meter dash (54.38); and Peter Steele, second in the 3200-meter run (11:36.86).
The Bulldog 4×800-meter relay team of Lin, Blake Brockmeyer, Sterling Steele and John Corwin placed sixth in 10:19.14. The 4×200-meter relay team of Ness, Riley Vanatta, Jordan Jeffers and Stout finished third in 1:42.50. The 4×400-meter relay team of Mattis, Ness, Lin and Stout placed fifth with a time of 3:56.27.
Gallatin athletes competed in the North Platte Invitational on Tuesday. Next up for the Bulldogs is Thursday’s Smithville Invitational.
