It was noted in the most recent (2003) National Assessment of Adult Literacy that Daviess County helps make up the highest percentage of residents who lack basic literacy skills in the nine Green Hills counties.

The goal of the Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) Program and the High Tech/ High Touch (HT/ HT) Literacy Project is to lower/eliminate illiteracy in Daviess County.

The AEL Program of the Workforce Investment Board/ North Central Missouri College is proud to announce that GED classes for Daviess County began on Jan. 5. They are held in Jamesport at the Community Building in the City Park. They take place every Tuesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and every Friday from 9-11 a.m. Every student enrolled in the class is offered the assistance of one-on-one tutoring sessions provided by a supplemental literacy program. The HT/HT Literacy Project is actively recruiting volunteer tutors within the community.

The efforts of AEL are to provide adult learners with tools needed to reach their individual goals and to earn a GED. Obtaining a GED will assist in gaining employment, a better job, stronger relationships with family, feelings of accomplishment, and self-confidence. This helps boost the economy by producing individuals who have increased educational levels and who are more desirable employees for the community. The class will prepare each student individually for taking the GED exam. Students will be continually assessed on their education levels so that the class is as productive as possible for each student.

Eligible students include anyone who is 17 years of age or older or age 16 and have successfully completed 16 credit hours towards high school graduation. AEL students cannot be currently enrolled in any other secondary institution.

The HT/HT Literacy Project was developed to support the need for trained volunteers to serve as tutors for AEL participants whose basic literacy skills are at the lowest educational functioning levels. With the help of tutors, adult learners will be able to raise their educational levels to meet their personal goals and also have the opportunity to obtain their GED in the AEL classroom. All tutors will be trained and given the knowledge and tools needed to provide adequate lessons for their student to gain not only learning skills, but important life skills as well.

The AEL and HT/HT programs are working together very hard to improve the community as a whole. Many advantages have been given to assist students in learning. Internet service has been provided for classroom use as well as laptops, books, and all other educational materials that will be needed. Community and individual participation will help ensure funding for program continuance in Daviess County.
