Ten students recently completed the Safe Sitter® Program sponsored by Wright Memorial Hospital on Feb. 6 and 13.
The goal of this national program is to reduce the number of accidental and preventable deaths among children being cared for by babysitters.
The class teaches 11- to 13-year-old girls and boys how to handle emergencies when caring for younger children. Safe Sitters learned how to handle life-threatening emergencies and were given hands-on practice in basic lifesaving techniques so they are better prepared in a crisis. Students also learned about safety and security precautions and were provided with information on child development and age-appropriate activities.
To successfully complete the program, the participants had to pass an oral and written test to show they had mastered the key concepts and had the skills necessary to handle an emergency.
The Safe Sitter program was developed by an Indianapolis pediatrician after a friend’s child choked while in the care of a babysitter.
