The Winston R-6 Board of Education approved a change to a seven period day schedule for the high school during their regular meeting held Jan. 18. Currently the high school operates on a 10 period block schedule. The change will take effect next school year, which begins in August, 2010.
The board discussed some of the advantages of changing to the seven period schedule — increased minutes of instruction for individual classes; increased daily contact between students and teachers; and less instructional time missed when students are gone to school activities or are absent.
In other business, the superintendent reported future dates of importance, including Feb. 9 – spelling bee at Gallatin school; Feb. 11 – early out for parent teacher conference from 2-6 p.m.; and Feb. 24 – homecoming vs Union Star.
The following five makeup days will be used for the days missed because of bad weather: Jan. 18; Feb. 15; April 1; April 6; April 7.
Board candidates filing for the April 6 election are David Neth, Scot Wilkerson and Allen Rhoades.

Elementary principal reported attendance rate of 97.96%.
December elementary Students of the Month were Brittany Etzler, kindergarten, and Kristchon Hisel, sixth grade.
January character education theme is "respect."
High school principal reported and attendance rate of 97.05%.
December high school Students of the Month were Amber Mullen and Clint Alexander.
Five duel credit courses have been added for students to enroll in during second semester: health, intro to sociology, fitness and wellness, micro computers, and college algebra.
Over Christmas break, a group of volunteers hung four donated fold-down side baskets in the gym.
Fourth grader Sarah Neely and fourth grade teacher Mrs. Jessen presented to the board a highlight of the school’s recently completed service learning project. The elementary school collected canned food for the Green Hills community Action Agency.
The board conducted a closed session that involved a student matter.
A gym rental request was approved.
The board approved a bid for the purchase of a new school bus from Central States Bus Services.
The board approved school policy updates provided by the district’s policy service, Missouri Consultants for Education.
The board approved program reports in the areas of early childhood/PAT, community education, professional development and vocational business education.
An executive session was held for principal performance evaluations.
Next regular board meting is scheduled for 6 p.m on Thursday, Feb. 18.
