Lexington’s Alex Summers knocked down three three-point shots in the third quarter to break open a back-and-forth tussle. That, and a perfect night from the foul line, proved to be the difference in Friday night’s girls consolation game at Lawson.

Lexington defeated Gallatin, 53-48, to capture the consolation title at the 16th Annual Lawson Invitational Tournament.

The two teams traded the lead for the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs led by as many as four points. The Minutewomen took a 14-12 lead into the second period with a pair of late free throws.

Lexington gained an 18-15 advantage in the second but long set shots by Ashley Beck and Carly Boyd put Gallatin back in front. Lexington led, 20-19, heading into the second half.

The Minutewomen came out firing to a 29-23 advantage but a steal and layup by Ashley Owens capped a 6-0 Lady Bulldog rally that tied the game.

Enter Summers. Her second and third treys of the period, coming late, lifted the Minutewomen to a 41-35 lead they would not give up.

"The three-pointers in the third quarter were huge for them," said Lady Bulldog coach Rick Lin, "but we still had our opportunities in the fourth quarter to come back," he added. "We got ourselves to the free throw line but only converted four of 12. We got more shot than they did for the game, but this was a night where it didn’t fall for us."

The Lady Bulldogs could not make up ground down the stretch, despite a LHS scoring drought <197> only two points through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. The Lady Bulldogs also could not capitalize on their ability to get two-on-one breaks going down the floor.

Lexington hit all six bonus foul shots in the final minute, as part of a perfect 10-for-10 night at the line, but the Lady Bulldogs did not go quietly. Boyd popped in a pair of free throws and added a late basket to account for the final margin.

Jamie Brinnen, whose board work and chip shots kept her team in the game, finished with 15 points and 19 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs. Her rebound total ties the GHS single-game high set first by Rochelle Davitt against Hamilton in 2000-01.

Owens totaled 11 points and Boyd added 10 for Gallatin, which shot only 30% from the field overall and 35% (5 of 14) from the foul line.

The Lady Bulldogs ran all over Carrollton Wednesday night and came away with a 62-26 win that sent them to Friday’s game. Owens canned four treys to finish with 15 points. Boyd, Beck and Brinnen added 14, 12 and 10 points, respectively.

GHS Boys

Gallatin’s boys fell, 76-65, in Wednesday’s consolation semifinal. The Bulldogs led, 32-29, at the break but the Trojans went on a 47-33 scoring tear in the second half.

Colton Selby led all scorers for Gallatin with 25 points. Vince Wiley popped five three-pointers and finished with 17.
