I ran across an item with the last words spoken by famous people at their death or shortly before. I thought it might add a bit of humor to your cold winter days. It’s a bit cold down here, too, but so far no snow or ice. Here are a few last words.

"Thomas Jefferson – still survives" – so said John Adams, U.S. President who died July 4, 1826. (Actually, Jefferson died earlier that same day.)

"This is the last of earth! I am content." So said John Quincy Adams, U.S. President who died Feb. 21, 1848.

"I have a terrific headache" were U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt’s last words. He died of a cerebral hemorrage in 1945.

Lady Astor, who died in 1964, asked "Am I dying or is this my birthday?" when she awoke briefly during her last illness and found all her family around her bedside.

When asked by her sister, Cassandra, if there was anything she wanted, she said "Nothing but death," Jane Austen, writer, died July 18, 1817.

When actress Ethel Barrymore died June 18, 1959, her last wish was "Is everybody happy? I know I’m happy."

"Die? I should say not, dear fellow. No Barrymore would allow such a conventional thing to happen to him." John Barrymore, actor, died May 29, 1942.

"Friends applaud, the comedy is finished." So said Ludwig van Beethoven, composer, when he was about to die March 26, 1827.

"Beautiful" was the reply she gave to her husband who had asked her how she felt. Writer Elizabeth Barrett Browning died June 28, 1861.

Statesman Winston Churchill’s remark before slipping into a coma was "I’m bored with it all." He died nine days later, Jan. 24, 1965.

Grover Cleveland’s last remarks were "I have tried so hard to do the right thing." The U.S. president died in 1908.

"Damm it … Don’t you dare ask God to help me." Joan Crawford spoke to her housekeeper who had begun to pray aloud. The actress died May 10, 1977.

Harry Lillis "Bing" Crosby’s last words were said to be "That was a great game of golf." He died Oct. 14, 1977.

Amelia Earhart’s last letter to her husband before her last flight, read in part: "Please know I am quite aware of the hazards. Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be a challenge to others." She died in 1937.

"I have offended God and mankind because my work did not reach the quality it should have." These were some last words of Leonardo de Vinci, artist. He died in 1519.

George Washington’s famous last words were " I die hard but am not afraid to die." His death was Dec. 14, 1799.
