In the previous 46 years, only members of the junior class at 26 area high schools were eligible to take part in the contest," explained Steve Shoot, FEC’s manager of member services. "This year the contest has been changed to include area sophomores who will be competing for the opportunity to attend a cooperative youth leadership event in Jefferson City."

Members of the junior class will still compete to win one of two trips to Washington, D.C. sponsored by FEC. A separate essay topic and contest will also be held for area sophomores who will be vying for one of four trips to the Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience (C.Y.C.L.E.) in Jefferson City.

The C.Y.C.L.E. event is organized and sponsored by the Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives, which is based in Missouri’s capital city. C.Y.C.L.E. is usually held during the latter part of July. The Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. is usually held in mid-June.

The essay topic for the sophomore class is, "What can homeowners do to become more energy efficient?"

The essay topic for members of the junior class is, "If signed into law, how will the cap and trade legislation, now in Congress, impact rural Missouri?"

The essay contest is open to all sophomores and juniors attending a high school located with the service area of Farmers’ Electric Cooperative. The contest is also open to sophomores and juniors who reside in a home on the FEC system and attend a high school outside of the co-operative’s service territory where the essay contest is not offered at that high school. The contest is not open to a student who resides in a home outside of FEC’s service territory and attends a school located within the cooperative’s service territory.

Children of cooperative employees and directors are not eligible to participate in the contest.

Sophomore and junior class English instructors received essay contest information and applications in the mail in late December. Applications may also be picked up at the FEC office in Chillicothe or by going online to the cooperative’s website at www.fec-co.com.

The essay contest deadline is at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26. The essays, which may range between 250-600 words in length, must be mailed and stamped at the post office before the deadline listed above.
