During the regular meeting of the Winston R-6 Board of Education held Dec.16, Superintendent Brian Robinson reported the following three make up days for the three days missed during the week of Dec. 7 because of bad weather: #1 – Jan. 18; #2 – Feb. 15; and #3 – April 7.
The board candidate filing period for April 6, 2010, election of board members is Dec. 15 to Jan. 19. Candidates can file from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. after Dec. 15 and until Jan. 19, 2010, on regular school days. This year’s school board election will consist of two three-year terms (David Neth and Scot Wilkerson).
Next board meeting is set for 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010.
Principal Abby Smith reported elementary attendance of 97.03%.
November Students of the Month were Shelby Mason and Cy Uthe, both third grade.
The elementary is working on implementing service learning into their schedules. Currently, elementary students are collecting non-perishable food for the food pantry and participating in the Beanies for Baghdad program, which will provide children in the Middle Eastern countries with used toys.
December Character Education Theme is Compassion.
Principal Eric Lewis reported high school attendance of 96.22%.
November Students of the Month are Noah Bilby and Rebecca Hiley.
A board policy regarding the use of tobacco products was discussed. No action was taken.
The board voted to accept a bid for banking services from BTC Bank of Gallatin.
The board approved a revolution pertaining to a competitive grant program, "Race to the Top." RT3 will award funds to states which develop comprehensive reform plans addressing four reform areas designed to improve student achievement. The reform areas are: standards and assessments, data systems to support instruction, great teachers and administrators, and turning around struggling schools.
The board gave approval for the 2010 summer school.
Gym rental requests were approved.
Program reports in the areas os Special Education, Vocational Education Family and Consumer Science, and Vocational Education Agricultural Education were approved.
The board held a closed session for personnel matters.
The Winston R-6 Board of Education held their regular meeting on Dec. 16, at the high school library.
