Gilman City’s boys held off upset-minded Gallatin last Friday night to take a 55-52 victory in the nightcap of a HDC vs. GRC doubleheader at Gallatin.
The Lady Bulldogs jumped hard on the Lady Hawks in the night’s opener and swept to a 66-52 win.
The late game provided plenty of back-and-forth action for both schools. Gallatin led through most of the first half until Nick Wilson converted all three shots of a three-shot foul with .2 seconds left. Gilman took a 28-27 advantage into halftime.
Third quarter action featured five lead changes in the opening 2 ½ minutes and six overall. Ross Oram hit a trey shot with two minutes left to give the Hawks their biggest lead since late in the second period, 43-40. The Bulldog squandered a pair of chances to tie the game but the Hawks held on to take a 45-44 cushion into the final eight minutes of play.
Casey Alden drove down the side of the lane from the top of the key and hit a layup to put Gallatin in front, 46-45, but Gilman surged again to a 50-46 lead.
Derrick Lin nailed a trey and Colton Selby hit a bucket to put the Dogs in front again, 51-50 with 2:45 left, but Taylor Eoff answered with a three-pointer to put the Hawks in front to stay.
Alden notched one of two free throw tries to cut the gap to a single point. Oram scored on a baseline layup inside the final minute to produce the final margin. Gilman twice missed the front end of bonus foul shots but the Dogs could not capitalize. Logan Henderson’s trey shot from the wing that would have sent the game into overtime caromed off the front of the iron.
Wilson earned game-high scoring honors with 16 points. Eoff added 15 for the Hawks and Oram tacked on 11.
Lin notched four treys and finished with 15 for the Bulldogs. Alden chipped in 11 and Selby added 10 for Gallatin.
Gallatin’s girls used a blistering full-court press to build a 22-4 first quarter lead that they never relinquished.
Ashley Owens canned 24 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Ashley Beck chipped in a career-high 18 for Gallatin. Carly Boyd finished with 10 points.
Danielle Myers paced the Lady Hawks with 13 points.
