The snow last week slowed harvest in Holt county and parts of Nodaway and Andrew. Snow soaked into the soil leaving fields muddy. This has slowed harvest where other counties had limited precipitation, continue to harvesting crops.

Corn grain dry-down rates in the field drop very little by Thanksgiving. Many late planted corn fields continue to have the need for artificial drying so the grain can be safely binned.

Growers should move ahead and harvest wet corn with the plan of artificially drying grain. There is also an option of letting the corn stand, but there will be harvest losses and the amount of loss will depend on the winter. Also, there is risk of wildlife damage, stalk rots and wind which may cause additional lodging and ear drop.

Also, if you are selling grain, check the different drying and shrink schedules of your elevator. They may vary. Be sure to consider the actual value of the wet grain before deciding on a marketing option. Our Regional Extension Ag Business Specialists can assist you.

We will be holding a one-day meeting with the subject of "How to use on-farm tests to evaluate new technology and products" Tuesday, Dec. 22 starting at 9 a.m. The meeting will be located at Holt County Courthouse Annex Conference Room. The Annex is across the street east of the courthouse and entry is from the south basement level.

This initial meeting will be limited to 15 growers because of the space. There will be a fee to cover lunch and materials. The workshop will be taught by Wayne Flanary, Regional Agronomist, University of Missouri Extension.

Pre-registration is required to attend the meeting. Please contact the Holt County Extension office at 660-446-3724 to obtain more information and to reserve your space. If we obtain more registrations than we can handle at this meeting, we will schedule additional meetings.
