Funeral services for Edward VanSickle will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Kirksville. Burial with full military honors will be in the Veterans Garden of Honor at Park View Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northeast Missouri. Edward Leroy VanSickle, 87, Kirksville, formerly of Hurdland, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at Kirksville Manor Care Center in Kirksville.

He was born Feb. 25, 1922, at Hurdland, the son of Bernard Edward and Nora Rehm VanSickle.

He was united in marriage to Mary Wilburn Tracy on Dec. 28, 1975, and she preceded him in death on March 13, 1996. He was united in marriage to Ruth Tague Hicks on Feb. 26, 2001.

Mr. VanSickle was raised in the Hurdland area where he graduated from the Hurdland High School. He attended one year in an Agriculture School at Ames, Iowa.

He served his country in the United States Air Corps during World War II. It was during this time he was an M.I.A. and P.O. W.

Mr. VanSickle was engaged in farming south of Hurdland most of his life where he raised registered polled short horn cattle. He was also employed as a United States Postal Carrier for 32 years at Hurdland.

Mr. VanSickle was a member of the D.A.V. Chapter # 48 at Kirksville.

Survivors include three step daughters, Anna Stone of Meadville, Jean Fales of Gallatin, and Maxine Farrar of Lebanon; one sister, Sharon Harrison of Unionville; seven step grandchildren; 15 step great grandchildren; two step great great grandchildren.
