A Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) has formed this year at the Gallatin High School. FCA is the largest Christian sports organization in America. It focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ.

The Gallatin High School FCA meets at 7:45 on Monday and Fridays before school at the flag pole to pray, inspire and support one another. They also meet the second Wednesday of every month. Recently 50 plus GHS students joined thousands of other students across the country for the Fields of Faith event, an interdenominational student to student ministry held on athletic fields.

FCA’s first meeting was this summer and the following officers were elected: Terrill Wood – vice president; Caleb Heron – president; Shelby Chadwick – secretary; and Jamie Brinnen – treasurer.

That small group began getting the word out and soon 30 students had paid dues and another 20 had signed up, for a total of around 50 students in FCA.

"We didn’t expect that many right off the bat," said Caleb Heron, president.

Caleb said coach Jeff White is the sponsor of Gallatin FCA. The purpose of the club is to affect students for Christ through sports.

"We’re trying to get God in the school as much as we can," said Caleb. "We feel like we need it and it’s just harder nowadays."

He said that so far there have not been many issues brought up involving school and religion. School officials point out that FCA is not a school sponsored activity. There is legal groundwork for FCA.

FCA’s "Four Cs" represent the four branches of the ministry — Coaches, Camp, Campus and Community. FCA’s four core values are integrity, serving, teamwork and excellence. The FCA website is www.fca.org.

FCA is not just for the athletes. It is open to anyone who is interested.

"No one is giving us a hard time about forming a Christian group," said Shelby Chadwick, secretary. She noted that the community has a strong foundation of traditional Christian values. "FCA is a way for us to express what we want in our school and in our lives."

Any students interested in joining FCA should attend one of the meetings, called "huddles," or talk to one of the officers.
