This year commemorates the 222th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States of America. In 1955, the DAR began the tradition of celebrating Constitution Week by successfully petitioning Congress to set aside this week annually to officially observe the oldest document still in active use that outlines the self-government of a people. The White House has issued a proclamation from the President of the United States of America to celebrate Constitution Week 2009. DAR has served America for 119 years as its foremost cheerleader. The local DAR is asking residents to fly their flags throughout the week, read the U.S. Constitution both in school settings and at home. Bells Across America was celebrated Sept. 17.
