Every year, the General Assembly is confronted with issues that reflect the values of our society. These debates are typically highly emotional and hard fought because these issues are normally less political and more philosophical. The issue which consistently fosters the greatest level of debate and intensity is the debate about what role government should play in protecting the unborn.
During my time in Jefferson City, I have worked to pass responsible legislation aimed at reducing the number of abortions performed in our state. Because the decision to have an abortion can be difficult and very emotional, we instituted a 24-hour waiting period before one can be performed. We brought an end to our state government financially supporting organizations that provide abortions. We have worked to make sure that parents are part of the decision making process when a minor is seeking an abortion while punishing individuals who would transport a minor across state lines for an abortion with the consent of their guardians. Most importantly, we passed legislation, which will allow our state government to provide support to organizations that provide help to pregnant women who turn away from abortion services and seek adoption opportunities.
This week, we will celebrate our daughter Addison’s second birthday. It is hared to believe she is already two years old. It seems like yesterday that we were constantly exhausted as we got up every few hours to feed her. Although I have always been a pro-life legislator because of my spiritual beliefs, the day Addison came into our lives, my pro-life position took on an entirely new depth. As we enjoy this event, my wife Stephanie and I will be reminded of all the ways she has enhanced and brightened our lives. We both feel very blessed to have her, and it is now impossible to imagine what life would be like without her.
While pro-life debates are often contentious, I truly believe that we must take the steps necessary to protect the unborn and reduce abortions. I was taught this through my faith and I have had it strengthened through fatherhood. As I watch this ever changing world evolve around us, I believe stronger than ever that we must foster a society that values life and protects the unborn.
