Our Congress has passed laws providing benefits for active duty personnel and veterans.
However, in general the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Veterans Administration (VA) are lacking in providing these personnel and veterans with information regarding these benefits. Veterans and DOD personnel acting on their own have experienced difficulties, including denials, not only in obtaining these benefits, but also in learning what programs and benefits are available to them.

For this reason the national veteran organizations, such as the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and others, along with the Missouri Veterans Commission have established staffs of Veteran Service Officers (VSOs) to help veterans and DOD personnel to obtain these well earned benefits. The VSOs have knowledge of the methods of the bureaucracy and may detect infractions and errors that can occur, and help in appeal procedures.
Though VSOs are staffed through veteran organizations, these persons NEED NOT be a member of ANY organization to receive help from any VSO.
From time to time, the VSOs band together and conduct workshops to advise personnel, veterans and their families of their available programs and benefits and to help apply for them. Such a workshop is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 13, 12 noon until 3 p.m., or until the last person has been served. This will occur at VFW Post 919 in Trenton, MO, whose address is 919 Washington St.
Veterans, personnel and their families need to bring copies of discharge, DD-214 or equivalent. If such document is not available, we may help you to obtain one. Also, if you have filed a previous claim, bring copies of any correspondence.
