A gathering of remembrance of Jack Chapman’s life was held Friday at Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory in St. Joseph. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the International Essential Tremor Foundation (www.essentialtremor.org), the University of Kansas Medical Center, or the Humane Society of Atchison, Kan. Jack Chapman, 81, Jamesport, died July 3, 2009, at University of Kansas Medical Center.

Mr. Chapman was born Feb. 11, 1928, to Alta and Lillian Chapman in Ada, Okla. He was one of eight children. He attended Byng Schools, graduating in 1946.

Mr. Chapman enlisted in the Army, serving in Korea as a clerk typist with the 24th Quarter Masters Corp. He returned to Ada, married Elizabeth Mathews and had a family.
He worked for Wapple Platter Wholesale Grocers, in the Price Marion Tool Company oil fields, and for Mayflower Moving Company. He owned his own Stinson Luscumb aircraft and diesel truck.
Mr. Chapman graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1966 and a masters degree in education in 1970 from East Central State College, Ada, Okla. His first teaching job was in Orlando, Okla.

He and his family moved to Atchison, Kan., in 1969 where he taught several science courses at Atchison High School. He later taught chemistry and physics at the college level at Highland Community College.
Mr. Chapman earned his doctorate of education degree from the University of Kansas in 1980 and attended the University of Wisconsin and Kansas State University as well. He retired from teaching in 1992.
He married Darla McCubbin on July 3, 1993. They have a daughter, Maryl.

Other survivors include his wife, Darla; sons, Randall of Virginia, and Greg of Colorado; daughters, Debbie, Arkansas, Dana, Gladstone, Raquel, Atchison, and Maryl; siblings, Billie Nordahl, Nevada, Wanda Chapman, Lillian Martin and Lucretia Scoffield, all of Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and a great-grandchild expected in October.
