During the 2008-2009 school year, the Missouri Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety, sponsored a special program for high school students entitled "Battle of the Belt." The goal of this program is to reduce the number of motor-vehicle-related injuries and fatalities among Missouri high school students by increasing their safety belt use. Statistics tell us that only 58% of Missouri teenagers wear safety belts. Young drivers (15-18) comprise 5.4% of Missouri licensed drivers and are involved in 16% of the traffic crashes in the state. In the last three years, 374 young people died in Missouri traffic crashes, and 72% were not buckled. A number of area high schools competed in this program, and Gallatin High School won the Northwest District’s Highest Overall Usage award for recording a 94.44% seatbelt usage following their educational campaign.
