Jim Cook’s bid to mow the high school grounds and Jason Ray’s bid to mow the elementary grounds were accepted by the North Daviess R-3 Board of Education during their regular meeting held Monday, April 13.
During administrative reports, Superintendent Becky Morris presented a letter of retirement turned in by Mary McCrary, kindergarten teacher. The board accepted her retirement by a vote of 6 yes, 1 abstain. Julie Kirby, special projects coordinator, also presented a letter of retirement, which the board accepted.
A proposal from the South Harrison School District was presented by Mrs. Morris. South Harrison would like to set up an alternative school in Bethany. The board carried a motion to commit to their alternative program.
During the first inspection of school buses, three did not pass inspection. During the second inspection, two out of the three buses passed. The big bus has an exhaust leak that can be repaired so it may pass the inspection.
Joyce Courter’s resignation from the nursing position was accepted.
After returning to open session after an executive meeting, the board offered Mandy Baker the school’s nursing position by a vote of 4 yes, 2 opposed, 1 abstain.
Wendell Burns, high school counselor, was retained, part time, not to exceed 367 hours by a vote of 6 yes, 1 opposed.
In other business at the April 13 meeting, bills were approved as presented.
During citizen communications, Isaac Smith requested the school board consider offering high school boys basketball at North Daviess for the upcoming school year.
The following election vote results were accepted: Debbie Ray 67, Lee Courter 55, Chris Nelson 31, Jessica Nelson 28.
Debbie Ray and Lee Courter were sworn in and signed the oath.
The old board was adjourned and the new board organized with Cecil McCrary as president; Jason Lewis as vice-president; Jeremy Hunter as secretary; Debbie Ray as treasurer. All the votes were 6 yes, 1 abstain.
Four teachers participated in Career Ladder, Annette Lowrey, Mary McCrary, Deva Lanning and Gregg Hartley. The board approved the career ladder. The following teachers were approved to participate in the 2009-2010 career ladder: Suzanne Slaughter, Greg Hartley, Deva Lanning, Annette Lowrey, and Nikki Robertson.
The Class of 2009 was certified and diplomas signed.
Mrs. Weldon announced that the Junior/Senior Prom went well. MAP testing is finished. The girls track team set four new school records. Grades six through 12 went to Union Station to observe science fair projects.
Mrs. Morris announced that the elementary tournament earned approximately $2,800 for the elementary fund. Book Fair and Family Fun Night will be held on Friday, April 17. She presented the renewal insurance quotes to the board.

Next board meeting was set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, at the lunchroom in Coffey.
