"I got involved with OATS as a passenger in late 2004 as I had no other means of transportation at that time," said Nancy. "I simply called the OATS office in St. Joseph and they then notified the Daviess County OATS driver, Carolyn Toney, and the rest is history, so to speak."

Nancy became an OATS contact and volunteer after the death of a faithful contact in 2006. She realized that someone would have to fill that role.

"I like being associated with OATS because it allows me to meet lots of new people and gives me a chance to get acquainted with some very special people. I enjoy volunteering because I have gotten much more from the experience than what I have given."

The quilts Nancy has made for Daviess County OATS have netted almost $2,300. She is the mother of four grown children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandsons.

With almost 65,000 volunteer hours reported in the past fiscal year, there are few organizations that have more reason to celebrate National Volunteer Week than OATS, Inc. In most of the counties OATS serves, there are between eight to 24 volunteers, mostly riders, who help OATS continue to provide a level of service far beyond what their funding might allow.

Since 1971, OATS has continued to rely on these volunteers for fund-raising, scheduling and publicity. The dollar value assessed for volunteer hours in the previous fiscal year was an impressive $887,330.

OATS is a not-for-profit corporation that relies heavily on volunteers from within their communities. If you would like to get involved in OATS, please contact your local office at 2921 N Belt Highway, St. Joseph, MO 64506, or call 816-279-3131.
