During the Knee-Hi 4-H Club’s monthly meeting on March 11, the youngest members explored the wonders of science. Gallatin High School science teacher, Dennis Steigerwalt, generously donated his time and knowledge to the children.
Under Mr. Steigerwalt’s direction the Clover Kids experimented with chemicals that once mixed would change colors. For most of the children this was their first exposure to chemistry. The children were then allowed to operate microscopes and view tiny organism and other exciting slides.
As expected, most of the children delighted in the oddest looking of examples. The slide exhibiting a slice of frog’s liver was a favorite, along with pond organisms. While the children enjoyed the novelty of the evening, they also learned valuable safety lessons and how to property clean up after themselves in the laboratory.
Clover Kids in attendance were Charlee Prentice; Jennifer Teel; Annie Grace Nelson; Trent Ishmael; Lewis Hunter; Erica and Ceirra Redman. Adult leaders present included Lena Ishmael, Jennifer Redman, Candice Prentice and Julie Vyrostek.
The Clover Kids are an officially recognized Missouri 4-H program for children ages five to seven. The children experience a variety of educational and recreational adventures. The Knee-Hi 4-H Clover Kids are under the direction of Alicia Chrisman, 4-H Leader, and Becky Simpson, 4-H Youth Specialist at the Daviess County Extension Office.
