Gallatin varsity wrestlers continued a late season roll on Saturday that saw them capture the championship in the Albany Dual Tournament.
The Bulldogs, who defeated teams from Albany, Maysville, Van Horn, West Platte and Maryville, chalked up their 18th straight dual victory since early January.
"We had an awesome day," said GHS head wrestling coach Phillip Limb. "We won some matches off being in better condition," he added. "Justin Taul got a big win over Garret Wightman of Maysville, and Levi Michener was outstanding wrestler of the tournament."
Three Bulldog grapplers eclipsed the 30-win mark in Saturday’s competition. Nick Lagodny leads the team with 34 wins. Michener and Matt Atkinson each earned their 31st victory of the season.
Gallatin wrestlers hope to continue their success this Saturday in Class 1, District 4 competition at Mid-Buchanan High School, but the Bulldogs face tough tasks in perhaps the strongest
districts in the state. Also competing at Mid-Buchanan will be grapplers from Albany, Brookfield, Hamilton, Marceline, Maysville, Maryville, Rock Port, South Harrison, South Holt, Stanberry, Tarkio and Trenton.
District wrestling begins at 6 p.m. Friday and resumes at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Following are outstanding records for Bulldog wrestlers as they head to district: 103 — Justin Taul, 26-9; 112 — Peter Steele, 24-15; 125 — Terrill Wood, 24-10; 130/135 — Levi Michener, 31-1; 140 — Brandon Ness, 24-15; 145 — Matt Atkinson 31-7; 152 — Shadow Phillips, 22-16; 171 — Ryan Hicks, 22-4; 189 — Jordan Phelps, 28-10; 189 — Dylan Leeper, 14-3; and 285 — Nick Lagodny, 34-6.
Gallatin put together an impressive string of dual wins on Saturday, taking victories over Maysville (51-14), Van Horn (74-6), Albany (54-27), West Platte (84-0) and #10 ranked Maryville (44-33).
The Bulldogs beat both Stanberry and South Holt in a double dual held last week in Oregon. Wood, Michener, Atkinson, Hicks and Lagodny were match winners in a tight, 39-37, team victory over Stanberry. Wood and Phillips won contested matches against Knight opponents.
