According to City Administrator Zac Johnson there are three wells the city gets water from. Two of those wells are very high in iron. One of the wells has no iron at all.
The well the city runs all the time is the one with no iron. That well went down in late December last year. It went down because there was a hole in the well screen. The well screen, or casing, is down in the ground around the pump. Sand and gravel got in through the hole and destroyed the pump.
The city had to use the other two wells which are high in iron. That’s what’s been causing the brown look to the water.
A crew came in and looked at the well and the city received their results back on Jan. 26. The pump will need to be re-lined and a new pump installed. The city placed the order for what is needed to fix it yesterday, Jan. 27. The well should be back up and going in two weeks.
"We’ve been pumping out of the other two pumps which are high in iron," said Mr. Johnson. "That’s what caused the red or yellow tint to the water. It’s still good quality water and safe. It just doesn’t look real pretty."
