Arland (Slick) Haynes, 96, passed away Saturday Dec. 20 at the Lake Viking Health Care Center in Gallatin. Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23 at the First Christian Church in Gallatin. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery near Gallatin. Memorial contri- butions may be made to the Gallatin First Christian Church, Building Fund. Arrangements by McWil- liams Funeral Home in Gallatin.

Arland was born May 23, 1912 to William and Maude (Hininger) Haynes in Hale, Mo. The Haynes family moved to Gallatin in 1925. He graduated from Gallatin High School in 1930. While in school he acquired the nickname Slick and it remained with him through- out his life. Arland stayed in the Gallatin area for a few years before moving to Kansas City. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942, serving as a Seabee. He was a World War II Veteran stationed in the South Pacific for 28 months. During his tour of duty Arland operated many types of heavy equipment. After being discharged from the Navy in 1945, Arland returned to Los Angeles, Calif. He was united in marriage to his high school friend Mary Daugherty on Dec. 12, 1945, in Los Angeles where the couple lived for 30 years. Mary preceded him in death April 20, 2005 after 59 years of marriage. Arland was employed as a bus driver for five years before taking a supervisor position at Anemostat Manufacturing in Los Angeles, retiring in 1975. The couple returned to Gallatin to care for family. Arland and Mary enjoyed the time they spent traveling, seeing new and different places.

Arland was baptized into the First Christian Church in Tina in 1920 at the age of eight years old. He became a member of the Gallatin First Christian Church in 1925 where he was a faithful and dedicated servant. Through the years Arland served the church in many capacities; Deacon, Elder, financial secretary, he also served on the board and was inducted as an Elder Emeritus. His passion for the church was evident by those who knew him. He also served as a board member for the Daviess County Care Center and Gallatin Senior Citizens. He was a 50 year member of the Gallatin Masonic Lodge and also the Moila Shrine Temple in St. Joseph, Mo.; He was a member of the local VFW Post where he served as Chaplain for many years. Arland was truly a gentleman; his compassion, wisdom and kindness will be sadly missed by his church family and friends.

Arland was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary, sister Lola Mae Fender and brother William Haynes.

Survivors include a host of friends and his church family.
