Opening round play in the 32nd Gallatin Invitational featured a new girls scoring record and three upsets, according to how the teams were seeded.
Hamilton’s top-seeded, eight-woman squad posted a record 94 points against #8 Gilman City on Monday. The Lady Hornets, with solid play from three freshmen, rolled to a 94-21 victory that sets up a Thursday, 4:30 p.m. game against fifth-seeded Trenton, which upset #4 Newtown-Harris, 48-27, in the opening round.
Sophomore all-stater Lindsay Vollmer scored 34 points to lead the Lady Hornets, but received 22 points in support from junior Eileen Greenwood, 12 from freshman Katrina Grossman and 10 from senior Ashley Flook.
Gallatin’s girls led throughout on their way to a 44-31 opening round victory over Maysville. The Lady Bulldog guard tandem of Courtney Ray and Ashley Owens combined for 27 points. Ray led all scorers with 16 and Owens finished with 11.
Gallatin’s #2 seeded girls face South Harrison Thursday at 7 p.m. in the semifinal round. South Harrison downed Winston, 64-34, getting 21 points from all-stater Kelsey Butler.
Hamilton’s boys used a 16-0 run, at the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second, to kick start their offense on the way to a 73-43 first round victory over Gallatin. The #2 Hornets advance to face #6 Maysville at 8:15 on Thursday. The Wolverines upset #3 Trenton, 76-67, in overtime, to advance to the semis.
The Bulldogs succumbed to an up-tempo pace and too much bench strength as the Hornets were able to throw two fresh rotations at the Dogs throughout the game. Derrick Sprague paced Gallatin with 13 points. Hamilton put four players in double figures, led by Brandon Hemry’s 13.
Gallatin moves to the consolation side of the bracket, where the Bulldogs will face Trenton at 5:45 today (Wednesday).
