The Winston R-6 Board of Education set filing dates for two seats on the school board during their regular meeting held Wednesday, Nov. 19. Dates are December 6, 2008, through January 22, 2009.
Lisa Yost gave the superintendent’s report.
Mrs. Yost discussed the Social Security law that will begin on July 1, 2009.
The district met 12 out of 14 standards on the AYP.
Budget amendments were presented to the board.
Board policy updates were presented for first reading.
Mrs. Yost discussed insurance updates and the possibility of joining a co-op with Forest T Jones. The district was also proposed by current carrier to have a January renewal date and have the rates locked in for 18 months with a July 2010 renewal date set.
The board approved gym rental for Eric Lewis on December 7 and January 31, 2009, with insurance provided by Mr. Lewis.
Elementary report was given by Abby Smith. Attendance rate was 97.3%; enrollment for preschool through sixth grade was 110. October Students of the Month are Tyler Turner and Kristen Brownlee.
Elementary Principal Mrs. Smith presented the board new reading strategies that will be implemented this year, beginning with a reading needs assessment guided by RPDC Representative Mrs. Wehrl.
Mrs. Smith gave a report on the Veteran’s Day Program.
She discussed with the board a discipline policy that will be used for students K-6.
A set of 18 new wireless laptops are now being used in the elementary.
Mrs. Smith discussed discontinuing departmentalizing for fifth and sixth grades beginning second semester and the board approved.
The theme of the month is "Trustworthy".
High School Principal Eric Lewis began his report with congratulations to Tabitha Piburn for being selected to the "All District Band." Mr. Lewis discussed the adjustments that were made to the daily seminar for the students.
Program evaluations approved by the board included Homeless, ESL, Migratory Students, Facilities and Safety.
Guidelines were set for the superintendent search.
The board entered executive session to discuss personnel.
December board meeting was set for Wednesday, Dec. 15.
Members present for the entire November 19 meeting were Scot Wilkerson, Kendall Weigand, David Neth, Chretta Mastin, Shelly Mason and Barb Youtsey. Allan Ward arrived late.
