Gallatin’s Lady Bulldogs finished 2-2 in Saturday’s Benton Softball Tournament, and now turn their attention to the Class 2, District 14 Tournament which opens tonight (Wednesday) in Hamilton.
GHS coach Casey Cole has watched her team struggle in the field and at the plate over the last two weeks of the regular season. She knows the Lady Bulldogs must reconnect with the consistent play shown at the start of the season if they hope to do well in the district tournament.
"For districts, it depends on what team shows up," she said. "If we show up and play the kind of ball the girls are capable of playing, then we will do well," she added. "Hamilton and Trenton are playing well right now, but I know we can hang with them. We have proven that in beating them both already this year."
Though top seeds Trenton (#1) and Hamilton (#2) have been playing well of late, the district title appears totally up for grabs. South Harrison has beaten Gallatin. Hamilton beat South Harrison. Lathrop also owns a victory over Hamilton, but had trouble with an East Buchanan squad that Gallatin thrashed just last week.
Gallatin, 16-7 and the #4 seed, takes on #5 Lathrop tonight at 5 p.m. The winner will face Trenton at 5 p.m. on Thursday. South Harrison, seeded #3, takes on #6 Maysville in tonight’s late game, scheduled to start at 6:45. That winner will face Hamilton at 6:45 on Thursday.
The Lady Bulldogs absorbed a pair of losses to start Saturday’s Benton event. They fell to Mid-Buchanan, 6-3, and Bishop LeBlond, 3-2, in their pool, but came back to beat Cameron, 5-1, and Maysville, 7-6.
