An accident on I-35 at about 10:25 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, resulted in moderate injuries to four people and the closing of the highway for about two hours.

According to a report by the Missouri Highway Patrol, a vehicle driven by Eugene Baker, 48, Gallatin, and a vehicle driven by Larry Wickizer, 60, Independence, were both southbound on I-35 about 1.1 miles south of Cameron.

Mr. Wickizer was in the driving lane. Mr. Baker was traveling in the passing lane at an excessive speed. Mr. Baker changed to the driving lane to pass a third vehicle which was in the passing lane. Mr. Baker’s vehicle struck Mr. Wickizer’s vehicle in the rear. After impact, Mr. Wickizer’s vehicle went off the west side of I-35 and overturned once, coming to rest on its top in the ditch. Mr. Baker’s vehicle traveled south a short distance before leaving the west side of I-35 and coming to rest upright in the ditch.

Mr. Baker fled the scene on foot.

Southbound I-35 was closed for about two hours, but a detour was provided.

A passenger in Mr. Baker’s 1988 Buick Lasabre, Judy Curtis, 57, Jamesport, received moderate injuries and was taken by Cameron Ambulance to Cameron Regional Medical Center. She was wearing her seat belt.

Mr. Wickizer and a passenger in his 1988 Jeep Commander, Paul Johnston, 65, Sugar Creek, received moderate injuries and were also taken to the Cameron hospital. Another passenger, Barbara Fisher, 53, Independence, received moderate injuries and was taken by Lifenet Air Ambulance to Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph. They were not wearing seat belts.

Mr. Baker sought his own medical attention. He was not wearing his seat belt.

The accident was investigated by Cpl. M.S. Belshe, assisted by Sgt. S.A. Shipers, Cpl. M.A. Wilhoit, Cpl. A.A. Henry, Tpr. L.M. Newman, Trp. T.I. Goolsby, Trp. M.J. Lewis, Trp. B.E. Maudlin, the Cameron Police Department, the Daviess County Sheriff’s Department, Clinton County Sheriff’s Department and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department.

Summonses pending.

A Chillicothe woman received minor injuries in a two-vehicle accident at about 11:05 a.m. on Aug. 27, in Caldwell County.

According to a report by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, William Steffen, 81, Jamesport, was stopped at a stop sign on Route M. Mrs. Moore was westbound on Hwy. 36. Mr. Steffen turned into the path of Mrs. Moore and his 1991 Ford Ranger was struck by her 2006 Ford Mustang. Both came to rest in the roadway.

Mrs. Moore, who was wearing her seatbelt, refused medical treatment at the scene.

Mr. Steffen was issued a summons for C&I and no seatbelt.
