High School Principal Eric Lewis presented a cell phone policy to the Winston R-6 Board of Education during their regular meeting held at 6 p.m. on Aug. 19.

The policy was revised to ban cell phone usage for students during the school day, with the discipline added as the following: first offense will be a warning, on the second offense the phone will be held in the principal’s office until a parent picks up the phone; third offense and for each offense afterwards will be Saturday school. Teachers are not to use cell phones while students are present.

Beth, Terry and Barbara Caldwell made a request to the school board to allow the Winston school bus to transport children to Altamont. Superintendent Lisa Bielby made a recommendation not to do this. The board carried a motion to allow the Winston bus to transport students to Altamont.

The board allowed the use of the gym with rental fee waived for Taner Caldwell on Nov. 1 for Troop #167 for a volleyball tournament and for PTO for school rental for September 20 for Family Field Day. There was also a request granted for school rental for Caldwell Christmas on Dec. 20.

The resignation of Tim Morrison, art teacher, was accepted. The board agreed to hire Abbie Flynn for art.

Wayne Alexander was hired as bus driver. Michael Pulley will be NHS sponsor.

Ron Hiley was approved to mow the former CRP ground west of the school.

A motion carried to cash in a CD and place it in the operating fund.

Abby Smith, elementary principal, reported that elementary enrollment is 93 K-6.

The school district will install a back flow device to be in compliance with the water district and DNR.

Applications will be taken for substitute bus drivers and also for transportation of student for afternoon to Hamilton.

The board held an executive session.

Next regular school board meeting is Sept. 18, 2008.

The tax rate hearing was held on Aug. 21 and the school’s tax rate was set at $3.16.
