Gallatin softball girls took a non-conference homestand Monday and Tuesday to open the 2008 season at 2-0.

Maggie Strange doubled and singled twice and drove in three runs to help the Lady Bulldogs to a 5-3 victory over Trenton in Monday’s opener.

Gallatin jumped out in front, 2-0, in the first inning when Courtney Ray took a pitch on the hand and Ashley Owens bunted over the pitcher’s head. Following a double steal, Strange stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run double down the left field line.

Trenton took the lead with a run in the third and two more in the fourth but stranded two baserunners in the fourth and again in the sixth frame.

Gallatin regained the lead in the fifth when Ray singled and stole two bases, Strange singled for an rbi and Shelby Chadwick singled (rbi) and advanced to third on a two-base, outfield error. Savannah Butcher drove in Carly Boyd (single) with Gallatin’s final run in the sixth.

Boyd earned the victory on the mound, striking out two and issuing three walks.

Trenton wasted a solid pitching performance from Aubrey Utley, who fanned 13 batters in six innings of work.

Tuesday’s first inning set the tone for a 15-0 blow out GHS victory over Milan. Five walks, three hit batters and five wild pitches led to seven Lady Bulldog runs in the opening frame. All told, MHS pitchers issued 10 walks and nailed six at the plate.

Owens had a pair of hits, a run scored and three runs batted in. Ray scored twice. Strange scored and drove in two. Chadwick had a run and rbi. Everman doubled and scored twice. Wren Tolen scored twice and drove in two runners.

Chadwick pitched a four-inning shutout for the Lady Bulldogs, striking out six and walking three.

Gallatin will be at Maysville next Tuesday and at home again Sept. 4 against Princeton.
