Aubrey Nelson and Ryan Warren recently returned from a week long leadership conference sponsored by the National Young Scholars Program.

The girls attended the camp in Decatur, IL, along with over 150 other 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders from all over the United States. Aubrey and Ryan returned this year, as alumni in the Eagle Program of Leadership, having completed the CSI Discovery strand in 2007.
This year the girls chose to participate in the Medicine Discovery strand, students in this exploratory examined such things as human skin cells under microscopes, conducted experiments to prove the breakdown of enzymes in the human digestion system and finalize the learning experience with a dissection of a cow’s heart. Aubrey and Ryan were further challenged by taking on the role of medical interns, in which they diagnosed and presented the conditions of four patients to a "medical board" on the final day of the program. Parents were also invited to attend and witness the public-speaking, team-building, and problem-solving that the scholars had achieved throughout the week.
The National Young Scholars Program is sponsored by the National Center for Early Academic Excellence, based out of Washington, DC. NYSP is designed for high-achieving elementary school students who seek the challenge of an intellectually stimulating environment, outside the classroom. Scholars are nominated for the program. Aubrey and Ryan initially attended in 2007 from the nomination of their 4th grade teacher, Tara Burns. Both girls will be entering the 6th grade this year. Ryan is the daughter of Todd and Kelly Warren of Savannah, formerly of Gallatin. Aubrey is the daughter of Bill and Vera Nelson of Gallatin.
