Missouri Ruralist magazine and University of Missouri Extension have extended the application deadline for the new Missouri Master Farmer Award to Aug. 1.
The later deadline will give farmers busy with rain-delayed planting or haying extra time to complete application forms, said Ron Plain, MU Extension economist.
Four Missouri farmers will be recognized with $1,000 cash prizes and industry-wide recognition. Organizers plan an awards banquet in 2009 plus an educational roundtable discussion with representatives from young-farmer organizations.
"This is a program for all Missourians involved in agriculture – whether a crop farmer, livestock or poultry producer, vegetable or fruit grower, tree farmer or vineyard owner," said Jerilyn Johnson, editor of Missouri Ruralist.
The award program seeks individuals with innovative ideas, business skills, sound conservation practices, agricultural leadership and community service. FCS Financial is helping to fund the awards and education program as a gold sponsor.
Application forms and details are available online at http://agebb.missouri.edu/Master.htm and at MU Extension centers and FCS Financial offices throughout the state.
